About "Listen. Say. painted. write. Beimen Street 2》

In the Old Town of Hsinchu City, there is an old Zhengshang Street. It was called Beimen Street in the Qing Dynasty and is now called Beimen Street. Many officials, gentlemen and merchants gather in the North Gate area, naturally forming a street house type of mixed residential and commercial houses. Even today, many of the old shops on North Gate Street are no longer able to solve all the people’s livelihood needs in one street, but it is still densely populated. Community, where would people who have lived here for a long time go to buy nearby? What to buy What are the characteristics of these family-run stores? How to use the space that is both a store and a home?

"listen. Say. painted. write. "Beimen Street 2" hopes to break through the established restrictions on the range of streets in traditional geography, and expand the concept of "Beimen Avenue" in the bamboo trench city of the Qing Dynasty into a multi-story life field, by preferring the studio's brushes. To record the life trajectory and related industries of the common people in the contemporary Beimen Street and the surrounding area with a perspective.

In early 2019, Zhou Yiji and Local Preference Studio launched "Listening. Say. painted. write. "North Gate Street" project, this project cooperated with Taiwan Applied Materials Co., Ltd., an American company located in the Hsinchu Science Park, and it started smoothly. It has been two years since the record has been recorded. Through this project, the life situation and life culture of the most important historical street in the Old Town of Hsinchu City are recorded in painting and text.

About Zhou Yiji

Zhou Yiji is a historic site in Hsinchu City named in 1926. Zhou Yiji is also a team established in 2015. We are concerned about the preservation, recording and promotion of historical culture in the old town of Hsinchu City. Over the past five years, we have recorded the changes in Beimen Street with videos, recorded the people living here with interviews, presented the present and future of Nanbeiguan to the public with performances, and used animation to tell the stories of the old shop with children. However, we have also witnessed the rapid changes in the old city and the decline of the elderly, and believe that there is an urgent need to systematically record these current conditions and pass them on to more people.

About local preference studios

The Local Preference Studio is good at observing streets and buildings, thinking about the layers of life left behind and the thinking behind the times. In this process, I drew a set of "spatial memory collection" research methods: through Interviewed local people’s memories and feelings about their places of life, and re-edited them into a series of keywords, each of which refers to a specific place impression or event. This way of presentation makes everyone feel the multiple aspects of a street, a community or a city. It conveys the life memory of this place beyond the blunt terms in historical documents, maps or reports. By understanding what the people who live, work, and live here on the ground see and think about the place, know that this place is important for people. What is the meaning of words?

Life on Beimen Street is a progressive style, and planning is also a progressive style. We invite everyone to take a look at the results we collected, and then join us to listen. Say. painted. write. Life in Beimen Avenue.

關於《聽。說。繪。寫。北門街 2》

新竹市舊城區裡有一條古老的政商大街，清代稱之為北門大街，現名為北門街。北門一帶聚集許多仕紳商賈，自然而然形成住商混合的街屋型態，即使到了今天，很多北門街原有的老店已經不在，不再能夠一條街解決所有民生需求，但由於仍是人口密集的社區，在此生活許久的人們會到附近哪裡採買呢？買些什麼？這些家庭式經營的店家有什麼特色？又是店又是家的空間是如何使用呢？

《聽。說。繪。寫。北門街2》希望突破傳統地理上對街道範圍的既定限制，將清代竹塹城「北門大街」政商大道的概念拓展為一個多故事線的生活場域，藉由在地偏好工作室的畫筆與視角來紀錄當代北門街與周圍連動區域的庶民生活軌跡及相關產業。

2019年初，周益記和在地偏好工作室發起了《聽。說。繪。寫。北門街》計畫，本計畫與位於新竹科學園區的美商企業 ─ 台灣應⽤材料股份有限公司合作，順利地展開，⼀點⼀滴的記錄⼯作至今已滿兩年。透過本計畫以繪畫與文字形式將新竹市舊城區最重要的歷史大街生活現況與生活文化記錄下來。

關於周益記

周益記是一棟1926年命名的新竹市市定古蹟，周益記也是一個2015年成立的團隊，我們關注新竹市舊城區的歷史文化保存、紀錄及推廣工作。五年來，我們以影像紀錄北門街的變化，以訪談記錄生活在此的人們，以表演將南北管的現在與未來呈現給大眾，也與孩子們一起用動畫說說老店的故事。但是我們也目睹了舊城區快速的變化以及耆老的凋零，認為亟需有系統地這些現況紀錄下來並傳遞給更多人。

關於在地偏好工作室

在地偏好工作室擅長透過觀察街道與建築物，思索留下的一層層生活痕跡與其背後的時代推動的思維，在這樣的過程中，擘畫出一套「空間記憶採集」的研究方法：透過訪談地方人士對於生活場所的記憶與感受，將其重新編輯整理成為一系列的關鍵詞，每一個字詞皆指涉一個特定的地方印象或事件。這種陳述方式，讓大家感受到一條街、一個社區或一座城市的多重面向。傳達出這一地方場所超越歷史文獻、地圖或報告書上生硬的名詞的生活記憶，藉由理解實地在這裡生活、工作、安居的人們對於該的的所見所想，知悉這一場所對於人們而言究竟有何意義。
